Update and Calender

Joint Master Marshall Ward decided to retire at the end of 2001-2 season. We enter this season in the hands of Master Lynn Lloyd, joined by her joint Masters Scott Tepper and Gayle Horn (details below). Thank you Marshall, for all you have done for the Red Rock Hounds: the wonderful cocktail parties before so many hunt balls, the official recognition you gained for our hunt from the Mayor of Reno and the Governor of Nevada, and your behind the scenes work on our new kennel's Special Use Permit, to name just a few. Best wishes in your future endeavors Marshall, from all of us with love.

George Fruehan has retired as Honorary Secretary after 22 years of service. George has been a faithful and diligent hunt account manager all these years and will be sorely missed. Since Lynn considers him irreplaceable, it goes without saying that he has not been replaced. One note of consolation: George has agreed to continue acting as timer for our bi-annual hunter paces, so at least that mathematical challenge remains in good hands. Thank you George, for giving so much to our organization, and for being such a wonderful dance partner at all those hunt balls.

If you have not yet sent in your 2002-2003 membership, please use the form provided to do so. You will notice that membership dues have increased. Just a few of the factors contributing to increased costs of operation include: 65 couple of hounds in the kennel this year!, increased BLM and insurance costs, new fixtures to panel, and new kennel fencing.

Season's Close

I have only two kodak moment memories remaining from the close of our 2001-2002 season: one of the hunt ball and the other of our closing hunt.

Scene one: Hunt ball, Lynn at podium having just awarded colors to the Lazetich's. Beaming from ear to ear, Pete approaches stage as wife Cindy awaits, holding the scarlet tails she has custom ordered in preparation for this moment. Quickly, it becomes apparent that the wrong size coat was delivered.

Knowing how much this means to Cindy, Pete nevertheless courageously compresses his 6'4", 225 pound NFL Pro frame into the garment, delivers a gasping thank you and a few bars of My Kentucky Home on his harmonica and staggers to his seat, trying desperately not to burst any seams before the coat can be returned. Cindy follows him, torn between the happiness of the moment and her intense desire to strangle the tailor. Congratulations, Pete & Cindy, oh how we love you.

Scene two: Closing meet, morning after hunt ball, everyone tired. Plan to hunt an hour or two and call it a day. Lots of guests, including Dennis Foster, Exec. Dir. MFHA, and Mitch Jacobs, MFH West Hills. Lynn invites Master Jacobs to Whip-In with me. Never a dull moment at Red Rock: Tally Ho in the pinnacles, hounds hit and head south into aptly named No Man's Land. Lynn follows hounds along the ridge line with Tammy Masters and Jennifer Hansen. Whippers-In Bodie and John Schaefer parallel on the east side, while Mitch, Cynthia Shea, Liza Cotter and myself parallel on the west. Hounds are moving very rapidly along the ridge and Lynn is delayed by the terrain and a split in the pack. Liza and Cynthia hold back to help correct the split and I call over my shoulder to Mitch that we really need to move along now as I begin galloping up the canyon ahead. Forty-five minutes later despite hard riding I have fallen a quarter mile behind the front of the pack and am making my way through heavy spring snow up the steep base of the Peterson range. My horse is tired, but traveling well.

There is a BLM fence line in my way on the face of the grade. I see a gate, climb to it, dismount, wrestle impatiently with the hopelessly tight wire loop holding it closed, manage to open it, throw it aside and remount. Mitch is coming along behind, his mare very tired. I can feel the hounds slipping away and don't want to wait to close the gate. I look back to Mitch as his mare struggles up the grade and shout, "I really need your help now Mitch, please get the gate and come on!" Time suddenly is suspended as Mitch stares at me incredulously with an _expression making it clear he believes I am completely out of my mind. The moment dissolves, I turn away and ask my horse with the big heart and the legs of steel to carry me on. He responds without hesitation and I think for just one second: God I love to hunt!

District Hound Show

As always, Santa Fe Hunt did a superb job hosting our annual district hound show. The cocktail party the evening before the show provided an enjoyable opportunity to catch up with members of other hunts and engage in lively conversations concerning our district.

Red Rock Hounds brought home the Pack Class trophy once again, and also won cross-bred Stallion hound, Stallion hound with get, and pair of unentered cross-bred hounds. Although we did not excel in individual hound classes, it was very rewarding to see the depth and consistency of our pack reflected in our capturing the breeding stock, pack, and pairs classes.

Thanks to Natasha Hunt for doing an excellent job judging all classes of hounds. It was great to see you Natasha! And again, thank you to Terry and Linda Paine and all their support staff for hosting this event.
